Hey everyone, and welcome to this week’s installment of TraQing News! Here’s some of our favorite posts from last week to get you back into the swing of working:
EarPods and AirPods and the power of ‘good enough’ | Jan Dawson: Raise your hand if, like me, you drool over the latest and greatest tech but personally use more basic setups. The default, ‘in the box’ option has a lot of power. How this works for premium brands, such as Apple, or brands with premium options, such as Samsung plays a little differently than you might expect. This essay lays it out in a very understandable and interesting, manner.
Here’s Everything Google Announced Today | Tim Moynihan and Michael Calore: Google announced a lot of new hardware this past week. Between the 4K capable Chromecast, the new Pixel phones, the Daydream View headset, and most importantly, Google Home, there are new Google goodies for everyone. While I’m personally most excited about the Daydream View, I’m also interested in how this new hardware will help bring Google’s AI, Assistant into homes.
How Laptops Have Evolved to Be as Brawny as Desktops| Daniel Starkey: Remember early laptops? They were never quite as good as a desktop computer, and calling them ‘portable’ was a bit of a stretch. My, how times have changed. Ultraportable laptops are the norm, and can handle almost anything a desktop can. The advances in science and technology that have allowed for this are many, and it’s very cool to see how they’ve advanced over the years.
Samsung’s quarterly earnings weren’t affected by the Note 7 recall | Mariella Moon: Despite gloomy predictions due to the Note 7’s tendency to explode, Samsung still brought home sizable earnings. It should be noted, however, that a lot of these gains came from computer chips and OLED screens, not from phone sales.
